Zenith has signed cooperation contracts with Austrian pilots, skydiving champions and BASE jump record holder Felix Bogatner. According to the plan called ‘Red Bull Stratos’, he will jump from a sealed cabin suspended under a balloon in the stratosphere above 36.5 kilometers above sea level, which is four times the altitude of a civil aviation plane. Felix Bougartner will try this feat alone, while setting four world records: the highest manned balloon flight, the highest altitude vacuum parachute, the longest free fall, and unprecedented use of the human body to break the sound barrier. The data collected will help promote aviation safety. Zenith is one of the sponsors to witness this high-risk feat. The Swiss brand hopes to create the first watch that breaks through the sound barrier, proving the reliability of its products in extreme environments. Standing down from the stratosphere
Zenith President Jean-Frédéric Dufour has signed a contract with Felix Bougartner to allow this Swiss watch brand to flourish. The event, organized by Red Bull and a team of scientists and high-altitude flight experts, will send a sealed capsule suspended from a helium balloon to the outer stratosphere, which is 36.5 kilometers above sea level. Felix Bogatner will jump down, and his fall speed may exceed Mach 1, which is 1100 km / h. The skydiver wears a supercharged space suit throughout the process.
Dive into the unknown
‘This is a real step towards the unknown. No one can predict how the human body will react when it breaks through the sound barrier.’ Felix Bougartner said in Lorike. To prepare for the expedition, the skydiver sought advice from Colonel Joe Kittinger, a record-holder of the skydiving record and a retired U.S. Air Force officer.
Man flying supersonic
In the upper stratosphere, the atmospheric resistance will be lower than the low-altitude resistance, which will help Felix Bogatner to fall faster. His falling speed may reach 1100 km / h in 37 seconds after jumping. Break through the sound barrier before gradually increasing the air block. Therefore, how to control the posture at such a dizzying height will become an incredible challenge.
Pioneering spirit at Zenith
This stratospheric expedition will test the reliability of Zenith watches in extreme environments: temperature, pressure, speed, friction, impact … If this parachute is successful, Zenith will make the first outdoor A watch with an environment that breaks through the sound barrier. Mr. Jean-Frederick Dover, the brand’s president, explained to us the considerations of the brand’s participation in this expedition: ‘The’ pioneer spirit ‘is the best footnote for the brand when it is always moving into the unexplored field. Innovative ideas and the ability to stay one step ahead of the latest technological developments are the fascination of Zenith. Our watches have participated in the greatest expeditions of mankind many times: Roald Amundsen has discovered the poles; Mahatma Gandhi joins peaceful struggle for India’s independence; Prince Albert I of Monaco sets off environmental protection campaign; Louis Blériot crosses the English Channel; John F. Kennedy’s political actions; famous star Michelle • A football legend created by Michel Platini; sent a doctor Jean-Louis Etienne to fly over the Arctic alone by balloon. Mr. Felix Bogatner, the brand’s latest image ambassador As adventurous as these pioneers. His plan is to be the first person to challenge Mach 1 quickly with the human body. This ambition sucks Thanks to us, trying this feat with him, we may make the first veritable supersonic watch. At Loric, our watchmakers are developing a special watch for this adventure-Zenith ZENITH El Primero Stratos Watch. ‘

Proven technology is the key to the success of such an expedition. Felix Bogatner will cross the sound barrier in the stratosphere, which is about 100 times lower than the ground pressure. For the human body, the problems he faces are similar to those encountered when deep-sea divers quickly rise to the surface, It is also exposed to extreme environments.
At an altitude of 20 to 36.5 kilometers, if you do not wear a pressurized spacesuit, due to the air pressure difference with the outside world, the water in Felix Bagartner’s body will begin to volatilize to the outside. The spacesuit is like a second layer of skin, ensuring that air pressure remains at a level of 10,600 meters. The outer fire protection layer will also isolate the severe cold when descending, namely minus 56 degrees Celsius. The 3.63 kg helmet continues to provide oxygen. The gas exhaled by the skydiver will be discharged into the space suit.
The volume is 850,000 cubic meters (10 times the balloon that Kitinger used during his expedition), and the balloon with a spherical surface of 0.02 mm thick is made of high-endurance polyethylene. Although this material is thinner than the packaging film, the balloon area is astonishing (equivalent to the area of a football field) and weighs more than 1,300 kilograms.
Its strange shape resembles a sealed capsule returning to the atmosphere. The sealed compartment is pressurized, and Felix Bougartner will sit inside for two and a half to three hours during the ascent. In the event of an accident and the vacuum parachute must be stopped, the sealed cabin will send the parachute safely back to the ground. The sealed compartment is equipped with three parachutes to ensure descent and landing.
Chest Parachute Bag
This backpack contains all the necessary measuring instruments: a transmitter and receiver connected to the helmet, multiple GPS orientation devices to track the position; a telemetry device; a high-pixel camera with a 120-degree field of view. The skydiving kit also contains an inertial gauge that indicates altitude (position / angle) and hover data. The notified body will use the data obtained from the above devices to approve the world record set by Felix Bagartner.
Felix Bogatner’s personal equipment includes a main parachute that must be opened at 1,524 meters above the ground, and the umbrella suit consists of 9 umbrella pieces. He will also carry a spare parachute. Another important piece of equipment is the stability umbrella: if the weight of the skydivers in 3.5 seconds exceeds 3.5G, the stability umbrella will automatically open to ensure its safety.
