Vacheron Constantin presents Metiers d’ Art Master Series The Legend of the Chinese Zodiac, the latest masterpiece of the Year of the Dog, for collectors and enthusiasts of fine watchmaking. The dog is a symbol of loyalty, dedication and reliability. On February 16, 2018, the Chinese New Year, the Year of the Rooster will usher in the Year of the Dog. On this occasion, the two latest works launched in a limited edition of twelve, highlight the outstanding technical performance of the 2460 G4 movement and the endless style of Vacheron Constantin’s arts and crafts.
Paper-cutting technology, the intersection of Eastern and Western cultures
Since 1845, Vacheron Constantin has established a special friendship with China. Chinese paper-cut art is similar to the famous Scherenschnitt in Swiss culture. This craftsmanship has also become a highlight in the legendary the Chinese zodiac of the Vacheron Constantin Metiers d’ Art master series. With the cooperation of master sculptors and enamel masters, the series is given a new interpretation.
Integration of multiple arts and crafts
The leaf decoration pattern carved on the gold dial is derived from traditional Chinese flower patterns. The semi-embedded design is used to carefully combine the reliefs of different depths to create a layered depth effect, so that the carved plants are suspended above the dial.
This is followed by the production stage of the Great Fire Enamel. Only a handful of artisans are familiar with this ancient craft. The master of enamel highlights the visual tension of color by applying several layers of enamel glaze on the dial. In the firing stage of 800 to 900 degrees Celsius, the enamel master is required to have a professional inference ability to strictly control the color of the glaze and the reaction generated by the firing, and this ability takes several years to fully master. The zodiac pattern in the center of this watch’s dial is carefully crafted using these superb craftsmanship.
Movement that reserves ample space for artistic creation
The 2460 G4 movement leaves a unique and ideal stage for the art deco design of the watch, making the pattern in the center of the dial the protagonist. The dial has no hands to display the time, and the hour, minute, day of the week and date are displayed through four display windows. The first two displays are sliding, and the last two are skipped. This original display was designed and produced by Vacheron Constantin, showing the brand’s classic and excellent manufacturing process. Through the transparent sapphire crystal case back on the back of the platinum or pink gold case, you can clearly appreciate the 22K gold oscillating weight in the movement. The oscillating weight is decorated with the Maltese cross pattern, highlighting the heritage of superb watchmaking skills. All parts are finely polished to meet the exacting requirements of the Geneva mark, and Vacheron Constantin is the most faithful representative of this certification.
